Synopsis
In Hammond, New York, in the 1950's, five friends form a girl gang under the leadership of the fierce Legs Sadovsky. The FOXFIRE blood sisters stand up for the rights of girls and women, and even animals, through devious revenge, and never get caught, until the "wild wild ride" in Acey Holman's kidnapped car that ended with a crash and the sentencing of Legs to Red Bank State Correctional Facility For Girls. When Legs emerges from jail more than a year later, she is stronger, fiercer, and more driven than ever. As the girls realize their dream of living together free from adults, they face the challenge of supporting themselves, which leads Legs to an idea that spirals FOXFIRE towards catastrophe.
The book is written from the perspective of Maddy, writing a memoir of her experience in FOXFIRE. By the end you know Maddy, Legs, and the others as though you'd grown up on Fairfax Avenue right along side them. In poetic language, using run-ons and ramblings like no one but Joyce Carol Oates could, Maddy tells the captivating story of FOXFIRE.
