Joyce Carol Oates

Joyce Carol Oates is one of most prominant contemporary writers in America. She has written over 50 novels, as well as numerous short stories, plays, essays, poems, and literary criticisms. She has twice been nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature and has recieved or been nominated for many other awards.

Oates grew up in Lockport, New York, which became the basis for the fictional Hammond of Foxfire. She began writing after recieving a typewriter at age 14, graduated as valedictorian from Syracuse University in 1960, and received her M.A. in English at the University of Wisconsin in 1961. Her first book, a collection of short stories, was published in 1963, and she quickly rose to fame with novels such as them. Oates is currently the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University.
