Feminism

"Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings." -Cheris Kramerae

I've always been a feminist, my feminist mother raised me to be. I was never afraid of the word like some women are today. I really don't get it — there's so many women and girls out there who completely agree with feminism, and appreciate its benefits, and yet they refuse to use the word to describe themselves simply because of some bullshit stereotypes that our culture has built up around the word.

We have come a long way towards equality in the last few hundred years, but we have not yet reached our goal. Pay is still lower for women, there are still comparitively few women in the government, there is still a high level of domestic abuse and rape, there is still not enough birth control awareness, the anti-choice movement is alive and well (I know not all feminists are pro-choice, but I see that as an issue for me), sexism is everywhere, there still aren't equal rights for queers, and there are still religious zealots like Pat Robertson who believe that women belong only in the home. Furthermore, the rest of the world has not caught up to western civilization and women all over the world are treated as second-class citizens.
