Moon Phase: Waxing gibbous
Weather: Hot, humid, raining, and thundering

I have tons of pictures to go through from my recent trip to Canada, so I thought I'd start with some plant photos from my Woodland Plants class this spring and some others from home and Canada.

This I took in my backyard when I was home for spring break. This tree is a volunteer, and my parents always want to cut it down, but I won't let them because sweetgums are so cool. The Latin name is Liquidambar styraciflua, which is one of the coolest Latin names there is.

A dutchman's breeches (plants have such bizarre names). One of the spring ephemerals we studied in class. The Latin name is Dicentra cucullaria.

A beech fern. I really like the shade of green on these; it's so intense.

A couple of nodding trilliums (Trillium cernuum).

Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) is one of my favorite plants. It's actually a dogwood, but it's very small. The berries are insipid but have a nice consistency. Unfortunately, it doesn't grow around DC at all, at least that I've seen. I've only found it in New England and the Midwest. These were in Bruce Peninsula National Park in Ontario. We also saw some yellow lady's slipper in Ontario, but the pictures didn't come out well because it was too dark.

Next time I'll put up some more Canada pictures; I have lots.
